E236 was built in 1893 by the Melbourne Locomotive & Engineering Works as E506. It worked on Melbourne’s suburban railway system from 1893 to 1920 when it was replaced by electric trains, by this time it had travelled a distance of 1,553,358 km. The engine was renumbered to 236 and was used as a shunter from 1923 until 1953 when it was officially retired. It was then used as a display at Spencer Street station (now Southerns Cross) for the celebrations of railways in Victoria. It was then moved to the Newport Railway museum in the early 60s where it remains today.
